Securing Microsoft Virtual Server Series- Part II

Part II of my new series of articles is now up at searchservervirtualization.com. In this article I go through securing remote access to Microsoft Virtual Server by requiring ssl on the Administration page and requiring ssl to use the VMRC client. In the next article in this series, I will go through virtual machine log file monitoring where you will see some scripts used to collect events from the event logs of your Microsoft Virtual Server host machine.  Happy Reading!

Who’s who of Virtualization Vendors

I recently gave a brief answer to this question on SearchSystemsChannel.com:

“I’m getting ready to recommend server virtualization to a client. Who are the most reliable players in the field and what do they bring to the table?”

Go to SearchSystemsChannel.com for the answer.

Running Windows as a VM on Linux with VMware Server- Dugg!

This is just a quick update on my latest article:

Running Windows as a VM on Linux with VMWare Server

When I posted this the article had received 798 diggs!

It has also been bookmarked on del.icio.us 427 times!

A few of the great comments from digg.com are summarized below:

“Wow! So is this like Coherence mode but for Linux? I was hoping something like this would come up…” -Kujila

“I think this is a very cool idea for cross-os-interoperability - while maintaining a consistent look&feel.” -cptchaos

“THIS SOLUTION on the other hand seems like the best of both worlds: windows-apps running in their native environment (windows inside vm) and projected (per terminal service) onto a Linux-GUI. VERY COOL.” -cptchaos

And from del.icio.us:

“Good description on running apps directly such as Excel so they appear to run locally.” -RobertJTownley

“For when I finally escape Windows evil clutches..” -DBayn1

“the hawtness” -iver2345

“very cool!, must try” -homerjsimpson

“sometimes linux needs a little windows lovin” -rxram

“This is a better tutorial than I thought. Using 2X Application Server for Windows Terminal Services is a great idea to finally polish off the integration.” -christilden

“Windows apps in Linux. Office 2007, here I come.” -Xinex

Thank you to all of those who read, blogged, bookmarked, and dugg my article! And, as always thank you to those who visit HarleyStagner.com.

Running Windows as a VM on Linux with VMware Server

I have a new article published at SearchOpenSource.com about running Windows applications in a window on an Ubuntu desktop without the need for a remote Citrix Server. It involves some trickery with VMWare Server, Windows XP, and 2X Application Server with the Linux client ;) . Happy Reading!

–Update

This article has now been mentioned on the VMTN Blog, Linux Today, and one of my favorites, Lifehacker! (thanks for the mention Gina!)

Two new virtualization articles…

Well, I just finished up writing two new virtualization articles at SearchSystemsChannel.com for those who are interested. The first one is split into several parts and discusses the pros and cons of a server-centric architecture. This article eventually leads to a product called Moka5 that utilizes advantages of centralized management and distributed computing. The second article looks at some of the disadvantages of a traditional terminal environment like Citrix and suggests how Citrix resellers can take advantage of virtualization technology to supplement their offerings to clients who may not be willing to deploy a traditional terminal environment. Happy reading!

VMWare to release OS X Version?

I came across a beta signup for VMWare for Mac OS X today. This is an excellent move by VMWare. Mac users were missing out on the benefits of a mature virtualization platform. I thought it would only be a matter of time before VMWare announced this product after Macs switched (pun intended) to an Intel platform. I have not tried Parallels Desktop for Mac yet, but the performance of Windows under Virtual PC for Mac is less than desirable. If the performance of VMWare for Mac is as good as its Windows and Linux counterparts then it will steal this market. VMWare has product maturity and a community of pre-configured virtual appliances behind it.

VMWare could provide the flexibility that Macs have desperately needed in order to compete in a corporate environment. It looks like beauty could meet productivity after all.
